To determine which level your team (or you, as an individual player) fits, assess the overall abilities of the players and when more than 2/3 of a team on the ice at any time exhibits the following skills, you'll have your team's level:

  • Beginner Team:
Played for one or two seasons; may have difficulty shooting or stopping; have some idea of the rules and positions; can perhaps skate backwards, but not well; probably cannot do crossovers.

  • Novice Team:
Can skate fairly well, but not with much speed or agility; have played for more than two years. Can shoot but generally not lift the puck or backhand the puck. Understand most of the rules, can stop and skate backwards. Team is not playmaking or breaking out. Some players can do crossovers.

  • Intermediate Team:
Can skate fairly well; have some puck control and speed; can make some plays. Can lift the puck and sometimes backhand the puck. Can do crossovers forward and backwards; can stop in all directions. Can shoot the puck and pass a puck onto a target. May be getting on in age or have been out of hockey for a while (maybe out of shape?) Understand the game but maybe not the subtleties.

  • Competitive/Advanced Team:
Fast, strong skaters in all directions with good puck control. Completely understand the game, anticipate the plays and are strong playmakers, involved in all aspects of the game. Been playing for over six or seven years. Can play all positions. In good physical shape; can play the whole game at the same speed and endurance.
